Rack Certification

The Ontario Ministry of Labour enforces the Occupational Health and Safety Act Regulation for Industrial Establishments (Regulation 851) and requires that companies have rack certifications. At GSE, our staff provide a range of rack certification services.

Our rack certification services include:

  • preparation of models to analyse capacity;

  • preparation of drawings to show capacities and design assumptions;

  • reporting on existing rack condition and the required upgrades or repairs to ensure compliance with industry standards; and

  • issuing documents for customer files to demonstrate compliance with the regulations.

We certify racks to support a maximum uniformly distributed load on each level. We also determine configuration requirements, such as the maximum number of shelves and shelf spacing.

Working closely with GS Inspection Consultants Inc., we conduct rack inspections to determine construction and condition. We inspect connections including welds, pins, tabs, and bolts, as well as the anchorage.

Our staff use five, recognized code criteria when analysing and certifying storage racks:

  1. Occupational Health and Safety Act O. Reg. 851 S.7 Table S.3 CLAUSE 45(b) Regulation for Industrial Establishments

  2. CSA S16.01 Design of Steel Structures

  3. CSA S136 North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members

  4. CSA W59 Welded Steel Construction (Metal Arc Welding)

  5. ANSI MH16.1-2008, SEC. 1.4.1 Specification for Industrial Steel Storage Racks

Our rack certification services are part of our full range of Pre-Start Health and Safety Review (PSR) services. To determine if you require a PSR, please click here.
